The history of W & J Graham's goes back three centuries. Brothers William and John Graham started a textile business in Porto in northwestern Portugal. In 1820, they accepted 27 barrels of Port as payment of a debt. The two brothers then decided to focus on making the best Port wines from the Douro Valley. This led to the creation of Graham's Port house. Over this time, Graham's has grown into an acclaimed and independent family business.

In the 19th century, Graham's Port experienced tremendous growth, earning their unparalleled reputation as a producer of Vintage Ports. In 1890, Graham was one of the first companies to invest in the Douro vineyards through the purchase of the famous Quinta dos Malvedos estate. In 70 years, a lot of knowledge has been gained from the Douro Valley and with the help of this knowledge Graham's Port chose an ideal place to plant a vineyard. The vineyard is oriented to the south where there is a fine composition of the soil for good drainage and a perfectly located ledge on which the beautiful country house is built. The Malvedos vineyards are characterized as one of the best in the Douro Valley and continuously produce high quality port wines.

In 1890, the Graham's Lodge was built in Vila Nova de Gaia, which was a huge step towards successful growth, and storing and maturing the port under ideal conditions. Today, all Graham's Ports come to the lodge to mature in over 3,500 large oak barrels surrounded by robust granite walls in the extensive cellars of Vila Nova. Everything comes from vineyards managed by people of Graham's, which benefits the wine. This process requires a fine balance between experience, art and science.

Since its foundation in 1820, the goal of Graham's Port has been very clear: They want to be the specialist in the production of the very best Port. Today, this high reputation is still held high. Only the crème de la crème of the grapes is used and the ripening process takes place in oak barrels. The entire process is supervised by experienced and driven Port specialists. As a result, Graham's Port excels in making the beautiful Vintage Port and the old Tawny Port. But every regular port is also made into a top product.

Making the finest Port possible is the mission of Graham's Port and they achieve this by remaining progressive and balancing contemporary technology with tradition.
